Higuian set to move to Inter Miami

Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain has left Italian champions Juventus after his contract was mutually terminated and is expected to join David Beckham’s Inter Miami club in the United States.

The 32-year-old joined Juve from Serie A rivals Napoli for a Italian record fee of £75m in July 2016.

At the time it was also the world’s third most expensive transfer.

On Thursday, Inter Miami manager Diego Alonso said Higuain was “finalising negotiations” with the MLS club.

Last week Higuain was greeted at Miami Airport by Jorge Mas, who is one of four co-owners alongside former England captain Beckham.

Former Real Madrid forward Higuain scored 66 goals in 149 games – as well as having loan spells at AC Milan and Chelsea – but never quite lived up to expectations.

Last month, new Juventus boss Andrea Pirlo announced Higuain would soon be leaving the Turin club.

“He was a great champion, a great player but the cycle is over,” ex-Italy midfielder Pirlo said.

“We looked each other in the eyes, we talked and we made this decision. I admire him a lot, but we have decided that the paths will separate.”

THIAGO SIGNS FOUR YEAR CONTRACT WITH LIVERPOOL.

Reports emerged on Thursday morning that Liverpool had agreed a £25million deal to sign the Spain international. And a deal is now said to be completed for the Bayern Munich star.

Romano claims Thiago promised to Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp in June that he would join the Reds.

Thiago played a crucial role in helping Bayern win the Champions League only last month.

But that appears to have been his final competitive game for the Bundesliga giants.

Liverpool are set to pay £20m in four instalments of £5m over the four years of the contract.

The extra £5m will be made up by performance-related add-ons.

Klopp was asked about a deal for Thiago on Thursday but refused to give anything away.

Nothing, actually. Absolutely nothing,” he told Sky Sports.

“How it always is, we are not part of speculation. We try to never be. That’s it.

When something is announced, you are the person I will call!”

“It’s completely normal that we have to make another step because other teams will make other steps as well.

“It has nothing to do with being champions, we constantly try to develop and find solutions to the new challenges before we have the problems with them. That’s how football works.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson has admitted he is a fan of Thiago but said there had been no sign of the 29-year-old at the club’s Melwood training ground amid reports the player was undergoing a medical.

“When you are at a club like Liverpool, you get linked with players all the time,” Robertson told Sky Sports.

For us, we focus on our squad. Nobody is in Melwood in terms of Thiago or any other player now for a new signing. Until something is signed on the dotted line then we don’t listen to rumours.

“Our aim is to excite fans, we excited them last season. They believed we might have won the league by Christmas time, but we [the players] didn’t.

“If we’re not exciting the fans, we’re not doing something right.

“If the club are exciting the fans with a potential link or potential rumour that we are going to sign this player then I suppose we are doing something right.

I have watched him. He is a fantastic player. A player full of talent. He would add to the quality of squad and probably any team in the world.

“If we get him, great. If we don’t then it is what it is. But we’ll wait and see until it’s confirmed then maybe I can sit down again and talk about his qualities a bit more.”

PREMIER LEAGUE AGREE NEW CHINA BROADCAST DEAL.

The Premier League has agreed a new broadcast deal in China to cover the rest of the 2020-21 season.

A contract has been signed with Tencent Sports after its previous £564m deal with PPTV was terminated with immediate effect earlier this month.

Viewers in China will have access to matches from this weekend.

The previous agreement with PPTV, signed in 2019 and due to run until 2022, ended after a £160m payment due in March was not received.

Financial details of the new deal have not been disclosed.

China has been the English top flight’s most lucrative overseas television rights territory.

It is understood the reasons for the termination were financial rather than political.

More than half of this season’s remaining 372 matches will be made available free-to-air in China, with the rest accessible via subscription.

Clubs will also be able to share short in-play clips to engage with supporters, the first such deal the Premier League has done anywhere in the world.

“We and our clubs have an extremely passionate fanbase in China and are looking forward to working with the team at Tencent to engage with fans in new ways over the coming season,” said Premier League chief executive Richard Masters.

LEICESTER CITY TO COMPLETE DEAL FOR ROMA FORWARD.

Leicester have agreed on a deal, in principle, to sign Roma’s Cengiz Under on loan with an obligation to buy him next summer, according to reports.

Brendan Rodgers’ side will pay £24.6m at the end of the season for the Turkish international who scored three goals in Serie A last year.

Rodgers has been in the market for a winger, having failed to attract Trincao from Barcelona.

The loan to buy deal is seemingly a mark of the way the club will do their business in what are currently difficult financial circumstances.

The 23-year-old joined Roma from Istanbul Basaksehir after impressing in his homeland, however, things haven’t gone exactly to plan for Under and he will be looking to kickstart his career once more.

Having made 26 Serie A appearances in each of his first two seasons, Under made just 18 league outings last term and now the Italian giants are hoping to cash in.

A talented youngster with plenty of tricks and skills who will add creativity to a Foxes side already boasting an abundance of forward-thinking players.

Rodgers will be delighted to get Under in at the King Power Stadium and will hope with the help of the rest of the squad he can get the best out of the winger.

Thiago Alcantara to complee move to Liverpool

Thiago, 29, joined the German giants from Barcelona in 2013 and played in last season’s Champions League final victory over Paris St-Germain.

Talks are ongoing between Liverpool and Bayern over the player, who has one year left on his contract.

Thiago would be the Premier League champions’ second summer signing, after Greece left-back Kostas Tsimikas.

When asked about a potential move for Thiago last week, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said: “I cannot end speculation as long as the transfer window is open. Did I mention that Thiago Alcantara is a really good player? Long time ago.

“It is nice that we are linked with him but that is pretty much it really. It is because he is a good player and Liverpool is a big club, so that is nice.”

Thiago started his career at Barcelona and was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United when David Moyes replaced Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, but the move did not transpire and he went to the Germany instead.

As well as the Champions League, he has won seven consecutive Bundesliga titles, four German Cups and the Club World Cup with Bayern.

Messi scores as Barcelona win Friendly

Lionel Messi scored twice for Barcelona in a 3-1 pre-season friendly win over Girona on Wednesday.

Messi, 33, returned to training last week after failing to force a transfer away from the club.

He struck two long-range goals, the second taking a deflection on its way in.

He was also involved in the opener, playing in Francisco Trincao to cross for Philippe Countinho to score, before going off after a hour.

Barcelona are due to start their league campaign on 26 or 27 September against Villarreal.

Messi, Barcelona’s all-time leading goalscorer, believed he had a clause in his contract which would allow him to leave for free and did not begin pre-season training.

Barcelona and La Liga insisted that clause was no longer valid – with any club wishing to buy him required to pay a release clause of 700m euros (£624m) – and Messi returned to training after saying he would not take the club to court.

He also featured in Saturday’s friendly win over Gimnastic de Tarragona.

Earlier on Wednesday, La Liga president Javier Tebas said he was pleased Messi had stayed at Barcelona.

Barcelona used 20 players in Wednesday’s game at the club’s training centre but Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez and Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal did not feature.

PSG win first match of the season

Julian Draxler’s injury-time winner ended Paris St-Germain’s losing start to the Ligue 1 season against Metz – despite the absence of the suspended Neymar.

Reigning champions PSG had lost their opening two league games for the first time since 1984-85 and had not lost three league games in a row since 2010.

Thomas Tuchel’s side had Abdou Diallo sent off after 65 minutes at the Parc des Princes, but German midfielder Draxler’s 93rd-minute header claimed victory for the 10 men.

Tuchel was without the services of world record signing Neymar, who was among five players sent off following an injury-time brawl against bitter rivals Marseille on Sunday.

Brazil forward Neymar has since received a two-match ban after punching Marseille defender Alvaro Gonzalez, whom the 28-year-old claims racially abused him. The French football authorities are to investigate his accusation. Gonzalez has denied Neymar’s claim.

With Diallo’s dismissal – a second booking for pulling Ibrahima Niane’s shirt – PSG have now received four red cards in their last two Ligue 1 games – as many as in their previous 62 combined.

The hosts welcomed back goalkeeper Keylor Navas, defender Marquinhos and striker Mauro Icardi after the trio were among seven players to test positive for coronavirus.

But it was former Real Madrid and Manchester United winger Angel di Maria who shone on another frustrating night for the hosts, who had suffered three successive 1-0 losses since their defeat by Bayern Munich in August’s Champions League final.

Di Maria created numerous opportunities for his team-mates and was denied by Metz goalkeeper Alexandre Oukidja at close range before eventually forcing Oukidja to parry his cross into Draxler’s path at the death.

PSG – winners of seven of the past eight Ligue 1 titles – sit 15th after three matches, four points behind early leaders Rennes.

Neymar given two game ban, Racisim claim will be investigated.

Paris St-Germain forward Neymar has been banned for two games after being sent off against Marseille – but French football authorities will investigate his accusation of racial abuse.

The Brazil international was the last of five red cards in Sunday’s bad-tempered Ligue 1 match after he hit Marseille defender Alvaro Gonzalez.

Neymar later accused his opponent of racism on social media and urged the authorities to use VAR to investigate.

Gonzalez has denied Neymar’s claim.

The other four players sent off have also received bans – with PSG defender Layvin Kurzawa suspended for six matches.

His team-mate Leandro Paredes has been banned for two games – while for Marseille, Jordan Amavi has received a three-match suspension and Dario Benedetto must sit out one game.

The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), the governing body of professional French football, has confirmed it will investigate Neymar’s accusation.

PSG said they will “strongly support” their player, while Marseille released a statement saying: “Alvaro Gonzalez is not racist; he demonstrated it to us by his daily behaviour since joining the club, as his team-mates have already testified.”

Angel di Maria, Neymar’s PSG team-mate, will also be summoned to the LFP’s disciplinary commission meeting on 23 September following claims he spat at Marseille’s Gonzalez.

Neymar, Paredes, Kurzawa, Amavi and Benedetto, were dismissed after a brawl broke out in added time at the end the match at the Parc des Princes, which Marseille won 1-0.

GARETH BALE COMPLETES SPECTACULAR RETURN TO TOTTENHAM.

Gareth Bale completed his emotional return to Tottenham on Wednesday night in a move that was driven by Jose Mourinho.

The Wales international has agreed terms on a year-long deal that Sportsmail understands to be worth more than £13million – part of which will be financed by Real Madrid – and he is relishing the prospect of relaunching his career at the club that propelled him to stardom.

There is no indication yet as to when Tottenham – who face Lokomotiv Plovdiv in the Europa League on Thursday – will make an official announcement but it will happen once a few minor contractual issues are signed.

Bale’s return to North London, seven years after he was sold to Madrid for a the world record fee of £90m, is laced with sentiment but it was a move that Mourinho, Tottenham’s manager, felt was absolutely imperative following his side’s dismal 1-0 defeat to Everton last Sunday.

Mourinho was adamant that Tottenham needed Bale’s drive and dynamism to enliven Tottenham’s attack and negotiations accelerated following discussion with Chairman Daniel Levy.

It is understood no players will go in the opposite direction.

The deal for Bale stands as a separate transaction as Tottenham will also move for Sergio Reguilon, Real Madrid’s left-back who has also been linked with Manchester United, on Thursday.

He is due to undergo a medical and will sign a five-year deal with Tottenham, paying £27million fee.

Mourinho had been coy earlier in the day when quizzed on how close a deal was to bring Bale back to north London.

While initially intimating he would make no comment, the Portuguese eventually revealed his admiration for the Welshman – a nod to how much he wanted to get the player.

‘I tried to sign him for Real Madrid which was not possible to do during my time there,’ Mourinho said in his Wednesday press conference. ‘But the president followed my instinct and my knowledge and the season I left he brought Gareth to the club.

There is no secret on that. Even Gareth knows that. But I’m not going to speak about him anymore because he is a Real Madrid player.’

Eric Dier, who will now become a team-mate of Bale’s, insisted prior to Sportsmail’s exclusive story confirming the deal that the players had not discussed Bale’s return in their squad WhatsApp chat.

But the defender described it as an ‘extremely exciting’ time for the club to bring back one of the game’s finest attackers.

‘From the fans’ point of view, when you’re linked with a player of that level, it’s extremely exciting for any club,’ Dier said.

‘For me personally it doesn’t really effect me in any way. It’s not the first time and it won’t be the last time.

‘There’s constantly speculation about people going different places, different talk in football every day.’

Bale became a fan favourite at Spurs where he scored 56 goals and provided 58 assists in 203 appearances.

In 2012-13 he was crowned Tottenham’s Player of the Year and also claimed the PFA Players’ Player of the Year, PFA Young Player of the Year, Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year and Premier League Player of the Season award.

He was the Premier League’s most impressive player and Real Madrid were aggressive in the transfer market in bringing him in to partner Cristiano Ronaldo at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Martinez Joins Aston Villa

Aston Villa have signed goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from fellow Premier League side Arsenal for £17m.

The 28-year-old Argentine, who made 23 appearances last season and played in the Gunners’ FA Cup final win over Chelsea, has signed a four-year deal.

Villa manager Dean Smith said Martinez will be a “key player for our club for the long term”.

“It is rare to be able to buy a top-class goalkeeper who hasn’t yet reached their peak age,” he added.

“We know how highly Arsenal rated him and we watched his outstanding performances last season in a trophy-winning, top side.”

Martinez leaves Arsenal 10 years after joining as a youth team player in 2010.

Gunners manager Mikel Arteta decided Bernd Leno would be his first choice this season and the German started Arsenal’s Premier League opener on Saturday – a 3-0 victory at Fulham.

He is Villa’s third recruit of the summer after striker Ollie Watkins signed from Brentford for a club record fee and right-back Matty Cash arrived from Nottingham Forest.
