LAMPARD’S STATUS UNDIMINISHED DESPITE SACKING – ABRAMOVICH.

Chelsea sacked head coach Frank Lampard on Monday but owner Roman Abramovich has insisted the former midfielder’s status at the club remains undiminished.

The Blues decided to part ways with their record goalscorer after a run of five defeats in eight Premier League games and the PA news agency understands Thomas Tuchel is set to replace the 42-year-old.

With the west London outfit ninth in the table and 11 points off leaders Manchester United after spending £220 million (€248 million) in the summer, Abramovich brought Lampard’s time as manager to an end midway through a three-year deal.

During his playing career at Chelsea, the midfielder won three league titles and the Champions League in 2012, which perhaps explains why the Russian owner made the surprise move to comment on his latest sacking.

Abramovich said: “This was a very difficult decision for the club, not least because I have an excellent personal relationship with Frank and I have the utmost respect for him.

“He is a man of great integrity and has the highest of work ethics. However, under current circumstances we believe it is best to change managers.

“On behalf of everyone at the club, the board and personally, I would like to thank Frank for his work as head coach and wish him every success in the future.

“He is an important icon of this great club and his status here remains undiminished. He will always be warmly welcomed back at Stamford Bridge.”

A club statement added: “There can never be a good time to part ways with a club legend such as Frank, but after lengthy deliberation and consideration it was decided a change is needed now to give the club time to improve performances and results this season.”

Chelsea will make “no further comment” until a new head coach is appointed and they will have to act fast with Wolves set to visit on Wednesday.

Tuchel, who is waiting in the wings, only became available a month ago when he left Paris St Germain less than five months after taking them to the Champions League final, which they lost to Bayern Munich.

The 47-year-old won back-to-back league titles with PSG, but that was not enough to satisfy the club’s ambitious owners who replaced him with Mauricio Pochettino.

Prior to his spell in France, Tuchel impressed in his native Germany with Borussia Dortmund following a spell with Mainz.

Tuchel will be familiar with at least two members of the Chelsea squad after he worked with Thiago Silva at PSG and handed Christian Pulisic a chance at Dortmund while the American was still a teenager.

Brazilian defender Silva commented on Lampard’s departure on social media. He wrote on Instagram: “I would like to thank you for everything you and your committee have done for me since the day I arrived.

As I told you, it seemed like we had been working together for 10 years!! Thank you very much for everything legend.”

Lampard guided the Blues into the fifth round of the FA Cup on Sunday with a 3-1 win over Luton, but has paid the price for a drastic drop in league form, with the club at the summit in December.

A win percentage of 52.4 per cent after 84 games was not enough to prevent the ex-England international becoming the 10th manager to be sacked by owner Abramovich.

CHELSEA SACK FRANK LAMPARD, THOMAS TUCHEL SET TO REPLACE THE BLUES LEGEND.

Chelsea sacked manager Frank Lampard on Monday after 18 months in charge, with former Paris Saint-Germain boss Thomas Tuchel reportedly set to replace him at Stamford Bridge.

Sunday’s 3-1 FA Cup fourth-round win against Championship side Luton was not enough to save Lampard, whose team have slumped to ninth place in the Premier League.

Chelsea said it had been a “very difficult decision” to part ways with the 42-year-old, who replaced Maurizio Sarri in July 2019.

“We are grateful to Frank for what he has achieved in his time as head coach of the club,” Chelsea said in a statement.

“However, recent results and performances have not met the club’s expectations, leaving the club mid-table without any clear path to sustained improvement.”

The club’s Russian owner Roman Abramovich said: “This was a very difficult decision for the club, not least because I have an excellent personal relationship with Frank and I have the utmost respect for him.

“He is a man of great integrity and has the highest of work ethics. However, under current circumstances we believe it is best to change managers.”

Former PSG boss Tuchel, who was abruptly sacked by the French champions in December, is in line to take over, reports said.

Chelsea are struggling in ninth place in the Premier League table, 11 points behind leaders Manchester United.

They have lost five of their past eight Premier League matches after a good start to the season.

Lampard signed a three-year deal in 2019 and despite a transfer ban, led them to the FA Cup final and a fourth-place finish in his first managerial campaign at Stamford Bridge.

But a huge outlay of around £220 million ($300 million) on new players including Ben Chilwell and German attackers Kai Havertz and Timo Werner has failed to translate into improved results.

Lampard’s points-per-game average of 1.67 is the fourth-lowest of any permanent Chelsea manager in the Premier League.

Tuchel only became available a month ago when he left PSG, less than five months after taking them to the Champions League final, which they lost to Bayern Munich.

The 47-year-old German won back-to-back league titles with PSG, but that was not enough to satisfy the club’s Qatari owners, who replaced him with former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Prior to PSG, Tuchel impressed at Borussia Dortmund, having started his managerial career with Augsburg and then Mainz.

Lampard is Chelsea’s record goalscorer and won three Premier League titles during his glittering playing career at Stamford Bridge, as well as the Champions and Europa Leagues and other domestic honours.

His first managerial posting was at Championship club Derby. In his one season in charge, they reached the Championship play-off final, where they lost to Aston Villa.

Lampard then became the 10th full-time manager appointed by Abramovich since the billionaire bought the club in 2003.

“He is an important icon of this great club and his status here remains undiminished,” said Abramovich. “He will always be warmly welcomed back at Stamford Bridge.”

LEICESTER GO TOP OF THE PREMIER LEAGUE AFTER BEATING CHELSEA 2-0.

First-half goals by Wilfred Ndidi and James Maddison powered Leicester City to the top of the Premier League in Brendan Rodgers’ first career win against Chelsea.

Ndidi fired the Foxes ahead from the edge of the penalty area on six minutes following a well-worked corner.

Jamie Vardy’s scooped effort was then kept out on 34 minutes thanks to a touch from Blues goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

On 38 minutes, Chelsea were awarded a penalty after Jonny Evans fouled Christian Pulisic, but a VAR review showed the offence had taken place just outside the area.

Mason Mount fired the resulting free-kick over the crossbar and seconds later, a defensive mix-up at the other end allowed Maddison to make it 2-0.

James Justin sent a free header wide and Youri Tielemans had a shot well saved by Mendy on 57 minutes as the dominant hosts threatened a third.

They closed out an assured 2-0 win after Timo Werner’s late effort that was disallowed for offside.

With 19 matches played, Leicester are top with 38 points, one ahead of Manchester United, who have played a match fewer and face Fulham on Wednesday.

Chelsea lie eighth on 29 points.

MASON MOUNT ON TARGET AS CHELSEA BATTLE 10 MAN FULHAM TO VICTORY.

A late goal from Mason Mount proved the difference as Chelsea battled to victory against 10-man Fulham.

Chelsea had the best of a goalless first half at Craven Cottage, with Mount smashing a shot off the bar, before a low strike by Hakim Ziyech was tipped wide by Alphonse Areola.

A minute before half-time, Fulham’s task got harder as Antonee Robinson was sent off for a reckless challenge on Cesar Azpilicueta.

After the break, Chelsea continued to press for an opener with substitute Tammy Abraham heading a great chance straight at Areola.

The deadlock was finally broken on 78 minutes, when Areola palmed a cross from Ben Chilwell out into the path of Mount, who steered the ball in.

Fulham stay 18th, with 12 points, after a first defeat in six matches, while a first win in four lifts Chelsea to seventh on 29 points.

FA CUP: TIMO WERNER ENDS GOAL DROUGHT AS CHELSEA EASE PAST MORECAMBE TO REACH FOURTH ROUND.

Timo Werner ended his 12-match goal drought as Chelsea cruised past Morecambe 4-0 at Stamford Bridge and into the FA Cup fourth round.

Mason Mount toasted his 22nd birthday with a fine 25-yard strike, with Callum Hudson-Odoi and Kai Havertz also on target.

Misfiring Germany forward Werner was pitched in despite the League Two opposition, with boss Frank Lampard desperate to kick-start his £53million signing’s goal return.

Werner bungled an early chance to raise fears that Lampard’s plan could backfire, but the 24-year-old later tapped home the easiest of finishes, much to Chelsea’s collective relief.

Summer RB Leipzig capture Werner wound up toiling 827 minutes without a Chelsea goal, charting back to the Blues’ 4-1 thrashing of Sheffield United on November 7.

Lampard will desperately hope the goal infuses the pacey forward with confidence, with the Blues expected to rise quickly from ninth place in the Premier League table.

So desperate for a victory were Lampard and Chelsea that they resisted entirely the chance to blood their latest crop of hugely-talented youngsters.

At least five academy players spent the week training with Chelsea’s first team, but all were ignored as Lampard sought to ease the pressure built up by four losses in six league matches.

Werner simply had to score once he started against Derek Adams’ Shrimps from the fourth tier.

Had this match come during his purple patch of five goals in four Chelsea games in October and November, Werner would have been able to put his feet up.

Instead Chelsea’s blue chip summer recruit was pressed into service in search of that deadly finishing touch.

That Werner needed to play in this match was evident almost immediately.

Hudson-Odoi and Hakim Ziyech conspired to wrap up what should have been a gift of a drought-ending goal, but instead of nod in at the far post Werner flicked tamely wide.

A gilt-edged chance to fire himself full of confidence missed then, and one he would doubtless have buried during his hot streak earlier in the season.

Werner’s brittle confidence was on view again just minutes later when he failed to gamble and dart deep into the area.

Hudson-Odoi’s clever first-time ball across the six-yard box begged for a tap-in, but Werner was out of range.

Birthday boy Mount finally lashed Chelsea into the lead with a crisp long-range strike, the England midfielder’s effort almost venting frustration at his colleagues’ lack of sharpness in front of goal.

In total control, Chelsea meandered through the remainder of the half, dominating possession and territory without cutting loose.

But just before the half-time whistle, up popped Werner – finally – to tap home for a goal when it truly would have been tougher to miss.

Ziyech’s back-post cross allowed Havertz to nod square in the six-yard box and all Werner had to do was tap into the empty net.

Hudson-Odoi slotted home in style to put the Blues 3-0 up after the break, the England winger latching on to Ziyech’s lofted pass for a well-worked finish.

The shape of this goal will have pleased Lampard no end, with one winger in Ziyech drifting into the number 10 berth and the other in Hudson-Odoi running beyond the central striker.

On such fluidity must Chelsea base their bid to climb the Premier League table.

Another prolonged period of dominance without end-product followed until Havertz nodded in captain Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross at the death.

CITY’S THREE FIRST HALF GOALS ENOUGH TO EDGE BLUES 3-1 AT STAMFORD BRIDGE.

Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne each claimed a goal and an assist as Manchester City earned an impressive 3-1 victory against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Ilkay Gundogan opened Man City’s account with a great turn and shot from Foden’s pass on 18 minutes.

Foden’s precise finish from De Bruyne’s low cross doubled their tally three minutes later.

De Bruyne then put the visitors firmly in control with a third on 34 minutes, reacting quickest to slot into the net after Raheem Sterling’s initial effort had cannoned off the far post.

Zack Steffen, making his Premier League debut for the visitors, made a smart stop to keep out Cesar Azpilicueta’s header, but Chelsea struggled to create clear-cut openings.

It could have been worse for the hosts as Rodrigo’s header was saved by Edouard Mendy, before Callum Hudson-Odoi netted a stoppage-time consolation for the Blues from Kai Havertz’s centre.

Man City now have 29 points and move up to fifth, four points off leaders Liverpool and with a match in hand. Chelsea drop to eighth on 26 points.

CHE 1-1 AVL: EL-GHAZI EXTENDS ASTON VILLA UNBEATEN RUN.

Anwar El Ghazi’s second-half goal earned Aston Villa a 1-1 draw at Chelsea to extend their unbeaten league run to five matches.

Chelsea made a strong start with Christian Pulisic twice coming close to scoring, firing into the side-netting and then hooking over from close range.

Olivier Giroud broke the deadlock for Chelsea with 11 first-half minutes remaining.

The Frenchman met Ben Chilwell’s cross with a diving header to stretch his run of scoring against Villa to seven straight league matches.

But Villa struck back through El Ghazi, who met Matty Cash’s cross six yards out to score his fifth goal in five matches.

Both teams pushed for a winner without success, John McGinn thumping the crossbar from range and Chilwell volleying a fraction wide in second-half stoppage time.

The result takes Villa to fifth with 26 points, one fewer than fourth-placed Manchester United.

Chelsea are just behind them on goal difference, having played two matches more.

XHAKA, SAKA ON TARGET AS GUNNERS BEAT THE BLUES TO REVIVE FORM.

Granit Xhaka’s superb free-kick helped Arsenal end their seven-match winless run as they defeated Chelsea 3-1 at Emirates Stadium.

Chelsea went close to opening the scoring when Mason Mount’s free-kick hit the outside of a post.

But Arsenal took the lead on 34 minutes, with Alexandre Lacazette converting a penalty after Reece James had fouled Kieran Tierney.

Xhaka doubled Arsenal’s advantage 10 minutes later with a brilliant set-piece strike into the top-right corner from 25 yards.

It was 3-0 on 56 minutes as Bukayo Saka curled the ball in off the inside of the left post from a tight angle from the far-right side of the penalty area.

Tammy Abraham chested in Callum Hudson-Odoi’s cross with five minutes remaining as Chelsea rallied, but the visitors were denied a second when Bernd Leno saved Jorginho’s stoppage-time penalty.

Arsenal move up to 14th with 17 points, while a third consecutive away defeat leaves Chelsea seventh on 25 points.

WOLVES 2-1 CHELSEA: NETO STOPPAGE TIME STRIKE EARN WOLVES DRAMATIC WIN.

Pedro Neto struck a stoppage-time winner as Wolverhampton Wanderers came from behind to complete a dramatic 2-1 victory against Chelsea.

During a goalless first half, Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud sent a header over from Ben Chilwell’s corner and Kurt Zouma rattled the crossbar with a thunderous header.

At the other end, Neto cracked a powerful volley towards the bottom corner that was beaten out by Edouard Mendy.

Four minutes after half-time, Giroud met Chilwell’s cross on the volley, and although Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio batted the ball away, it had already crossed the line.

Willy Boly volleyed wide but moments later Daniel Podence found a yard of space to beat Mendy with the help of a slight deflection off Reece James.

A decision to award Wolves a penalty for a challenge on Neto was overturned following a VAR check inside the final 10 minutes.

But in the fifth minute of added time, the hosts stormed forward on the break and Neto applied a fine finish.

Wolves move up to ninth place, with 20 points, while Chelsea stay fifth on 22 points

EVERTON 1-0 CHELSEA: SIGURDSON PENALTY ENDS CHELSEA UNBEATEN RUN.

Sigurdsson penalty ends Chelsea’s unbeaten run
Gylfi Sigurdsson’s first-half penalty earned Everton a 1-0 win over Chelsea at Goodison Park.

Everton were awarded the spot-kick in the 22nd minute after Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy had fouled Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Sigurdsson sent Mendy the wrong way for his first Premier League goal of the season.

Chelsea came close to a quick response when Reece James hit the inside of the post with a shot from distance.

Three minutes after half-time Mason Mount clipped the crossbar with a deft lob over the advanced Jordan Pickford.

And, after a second penalty award for a foul on Calvert-Lewin was overturned by the VAR for offside in the build-up, Mount hit the woodwork again, from a free-kick.

Everton held on to move up to seventh on 20 points.

Chelsea, who lost for the first time in 10 PL matches, lie third on 22 points.
