ASTON VILLA AGREE FEE WITH NORWICH FOR EMILIANO BUENDIA

Aston Villa have announced they have agreed a deal with Norwich for midfielder Emiliano Buendia.

Buendia was the Canaries’ player of the season as they won the Championship title and sealed an immediate return to the Premier League, scoring 15 goals and registering 16 assists – creating more chances than any other player in the division.

Arsenal were also reported to have been interested in signing the 24-year-old but Villa have moved quickly to land their transfer target.

“Aston Villa and Norwich City have reached an agreement for the transfer of Emiliano Buendia,” said a Villa statement.

“As Emiliano is currently in the Argentina national team’s biosecure bubble, preparing for a World Cup qualifying match with Colombia on Tuesday evening, he will undergo a medical and complete the transfer after the game.”

The reported £30million fee would be a club-record for Villa, with add-ons potentially taking the final figure nearer to £40million.

Villa boss Dean Smith guided the club to an 11th-placed finish in the Premier League last season and last week outlined the club’s aspirations by saying their owners are determined to break into the “upper echelons” of the top flight.

The prospect of Buendia and Jack Grealish spearheading Villa’s attack is certainly a mouthwatering one for Villa supporters.

Norwich signed Buendia from Getafe for around £1.6million in 2018.

Emerson becomes Barcelona’s third arrival in three days after Aguero, Garcia join

Barcelona have completed their third transfer of the week activating a clause to recall Emerson Royal from Real Betis for a fee of €9 million.

The Brazil international signed a five-year contract with Barca when he moved to Spain from Atletico Mineiro in 2019, but spent the last two-and-a-half years at Betis.

Barca agreed the original deal in collaboration with Betis, with each club paying €6m and Barca reserving an option to pay Betis €9m this summer to end the loan and take the player to Camp Nou. Betis will also be due 20% of any future transfer.

Both clubs paid €6m each to bring Emerson to Europe, with Barca reserving an option to sign him outright from Betis this summer for €9m. Betis will also be due 20% of any future transfer.

Juan Miranda has moved in the other direction. The left-back, who spent last season on loan at Betis, has returned to the Seville-based club for free, although Barca will be due to 40% of any future transfer.

Emerson, 22, becomes the third player to make the move to Camp Nou this week following the arrivals of Manchester City duo Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia.

In just over two years at Betis, he has been a regular at right-back, making 79 appearances across all competitions and helping the club qualify for the Europa League this season.

He is with the Brazil national team preparing for this week’s World Cup qualifiers and could be involved in the Copa America later this month in his homeland.

Barca have now added two right-backs in the last year. Emerson follows Sergino Dest, who joined from Ajax for around €20m last September, and the two will compete for a place in the team next season.

BARCELONA RESIGNS ERIC GARCIA FROM MANCHESTER CITY, SETS $344M BUY OUT CLAUSE

Barcelona will sign Spain international Eric Garcia when his contract at Manchester City expires next month, the LaLiga club have announced.

Barca have included a buyout clause of 400m euros (£344m) in the 20-year-old defender’s five-year contract.

He will officially be unveiled on the Nou Camp pitch later on Tuesday afternoon – but the presentation will be behind closed doors due to the ongoing coronavirus restrictions.

Garcia’s youth career began at Barcelona and he captained his hometown club at every level before moving to City in 2017.

The centre-back made 35 first-team appearances for City, making his debut in a Carabao Cup quarter-final win against Leicester in December 2018.

He made 12 appearances in all competitions as Pep Guardiola’s side won the Premier League title this season but started just three matches.

Garcia has won seven caps for Spain since making his debut last September and he has been included in Luis Enrique’s squad for the forthcoming European Championship.

On Monday, Barca agreed a two-year deal with City striker Sergio Aguero, whose contract expires on June 30.

UCL LOSS DOESN’T SOUR OUR SPECTACULAR SEASON – PEP

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola said their season remained an exceptional one despite the campaign ending in disappointment with a 1-0 loss to Chelsea in Saturday’s Champions League final.

City clinched a fifth Premier League title in the last 10 years with ease this season, Guardiola’s third domestic crown since arriving at the club, but the Champions League continues to remain elusive after Kai Havertz’s winning goal for Chelsea.

It was City’s first appearance in the final of Europe’s elite club competition but they ultimately came up short, but Guardiola was still happy with his side’s work this term.

“I would like to say it was an exceptional season for us,” said the Spaniard. “It was a dream for us to be here, unfortunately we could not win.

“For most of us in this club it is the first time here, but we work to come back one day.

“It was a tough season in the pandemic, but we learn from this for the future. I have incredible respect for the players, they gave everything, but we will come back stronger. I want to congratulate them for their exceptional season.”

Guardiola has won two Champions League titles as a manager, both with Barcelona, but none since 2011, and was again unable to bring City their first European Cup.

City, who won the League Cup as well as the Premier League title, have been relentless at times this season, but on their big night they could only muster one shot on target all match.

“It was a tight game and we had some chances, but against the defensive structure of Chelsea it is not easy,” Guardiola said.

“We struggled with long balls and second balls. In that moment you need the inspiration and quality, there were three or four moments that were close but didn’t arrive.

“We played in the Champions League final, we won the Premier League again and competed well all season. Now, I want to go home with my family I have not seen for a long time, take a break, and start working on how to approach next season.”

AC MILAN SNAP UP FRANCE INTERNATIONAL TO REPLACE DEPARTING DONNARUMMA

GOALKEEPER Mike Maignan has signed a five-year contract with AC Milan, the Serie A club have announced.

The 25-year-old, who is the third-choice goalkeeper for the French national team, will have the tough task of succeeding Italian first-choice Gianluigi Donnarumma, whose departure was made official yesterday.

Maignan helped Lille win the French league title on Sunday while AC Milan finished second in Serie A, 12 points behind their neighbours Inter. He will officially join AC Milan when the Italian transfer window opens in July.

Italian media reported that Milan will pay Lille €15million. Lille confirmed “the total agreement reached with AC Milan for the transfer of Mike Maignan”.

They called him ‘the Magic Eagle’ and said “he will leave an indelible mark on history with a championship title that no one will forget”.

They pointed out he had kept a clean sheet at the San Siro when Lille won 3-0 away to AC Milan in a Europa League group match in November.

Maignan, who was born in Cayenne in French Guyana, has one France cap and has been selected for the Euros.

HARRY KANE DECLARES INTENTION TO LEAVE TOTTENHAM

Harry Kane has told Tottenham he wants to leave the club this summer, sources say.

Sources said the England captain expressed his desire to move on during a face-to-face meeting with chairman Daniel Levy, and he would prefer to remain in the Premier League.

Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea have all lodged interest with Kane’s representatives, but it remains to be seen whether any club will offer the £150 million it will likely take to convince Spurs to sell.

Kane had repeatedly dropped hints about his frustration over a lack of silverware despite becoming one of the Premier League’s most prolific strikers, scoring 165 goals in 243 appearances to sit seventh on the all-time list.

However, he has yet to win a trophy with Tottenham or England. The club’s most recent setback came last month when Spurs lost the Carabao Cup Final to City 1-0 at Wembley.

Head coach Jose Mourinho was sacked six days before that game after a disappointing campaign in which they will miss out on Champions League qualification barring a mathematical miracle in the final week.

Despite this, Kane’s individual performances have remained strong. With 22 goals and 13 assists, only Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski (40) and Lionel Messi (39) have more goal involvements in Europe’s top five leagues in this season.

Kane has not handed in a transfer request and, significantly, he has three years remaining on his current £200,000-a-week contract.

Spurs are therefore in a strong negotiating position should Levy sanction his departure, but the chairman remains reluctant to lose the club’s prized asset, even for what would be one of the biggest transfer fees in history.

Sources said Kane is hopeful the situation can be resolved before the start of Euro 2020 on June 11, however, and that confidence could be based on unconfirmed reports suggesting he was keen to move on last summer but was convinced by Levy to give the club one more year in return for a softer stance at the end of this season should he still want to find a new club.

If Spurs are to grant their captain’s wish, they would prefer he go to a club abroad rather than strengthen a domestic rival, but Kane’s main suitors are all likely to be English.

Chelsea are in the market for a striker and would not be put off by the price tag given they hold an active interest in Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland, whose contract would command a similar fee.

Levy has a difficult relationship with Chelsea arising from previous transfers, however, which might therefore hand an advantage to United or City.

Fans have protested at the owners, ENIC, and Levy’s handling of the club in the wake of their involvement in the failed Super League project, and about 10,000 supporters will be able to attend their final home game against Aston Villa on Wednesday once coronavirus restrictions are lifted.

AS ROMA APPOINTS JOSE MOURINHO AS THEIR NEW MANAGER AHEAD FOR 2021/2022 SERIE A SEASON

AS Roma, the Serie A club owned by American businessman Dan Friedkin, announced the appointment of José Mourinho as their new head coach beginning in the 2021/22 Serie A season.

The Portuguese manager, dubbed the “Special One” by the soccer community, will sign a three-year deal with Roma.

“AS Roma are delighted to announce an agreement has been reached with José Mourinho to become the club’s new head coach,” reads the statement on Roma’s official website.

“Mourinho has agreed a three-year contract with the Giallorossi that will run until 30 June 2024.”

Mourinho, who less than three weeks ago was sacked by English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, returns to Serie A 11 years after his successful stint at Inter Milan, when he managed to do what nobody had ever done in Italian soccer – win the treble.

Mourinho has thanked the Friedkins and expressed great enthusiasm about the opportunity to take over as the new Roma boss.

“Thank you to the Friedkin family for choosing me to lead this great club and to be part of their vision,” Mourinho was quoted as saying on Roma’s website.

The appointment of Mourinho as the new Roma manager came just a few hours after the announcement that Paulo Fonseca, Mourinho’s compatriot and incumbent Roma manager, will depart at the end of the 2020/21 Serie A season.

“On behalf of everyone at AS Roma, we would like to thank Paulo Fonseca for his hard work and leadership over the past two years,” reads a statement by Friedkin on Roma’s official website.

“Paulo guided the team through many challenges, including the Covid pandemic and a change of ownership, and did so with selfless integrity and great character. We wish him all the best for his future endeavours and know that he will be a great asset wherever he goes.”

In the summer of 2019, Fonseca signed a two-year deal with the Giallorossi, and now the contract is set to expire on June 30, 2021. In both seasons, Roma have failed to clinch one of Serie A’s top-4 positions, which grant direct access to the UEFA Champions League.

Even though Roma are currently involved in the UEFA Europa League, their odds to access the tournament final are very low, as they would have to come back from a four-goal deficit against Manchester United in the second leg on Thursday at Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

With the appointment of Mourinho, Friedkin intends to bring “tremendous leadership and experience” to Roma’s project, key ingredients for the club’s goal to feature again in the most important competition in European soccer.

TOTTENHAM TO HOLD MEETING WITH ERIK TEN HAAG WITH AJAX BOSS BEING NEXT SPURS TARGET

Ajax boss Erik ten Hag is open to the possibility of becoming Tottenham Hotspur’s new manager.

Spurs are still searching for a permanent candidate for the role, having dismissed Jose Mourinho last Monday.

It’s now understood that Ten Hag ranks highly on Tottenham’s manager shortlist and the club are keen to strike a deal with the 51-year-old.

According to sports journalist Fabrizio Romano, Spurs have scheduled a ‘direct meeting’ with Erik ten Hag and the Dutchman is open to leaving Ajax in the summer.

Ajax are on the verge of becoming league champions once again and require only a point at home to Emmen on Sunday to secure the Eredivisie title.

Ten Hag took charge of Ajax in December 2017, following previous spells with fellow Dutch sides Go Ahead Eagles and Utrecht.

He previously faced Tottenham in the 2019, suffering a devastating Champions League semi-final defeat courtesy of a Lucas Moura inspired second leg fightback.

Other potential candidates for the role have included Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers, Wolves head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, former RB Leipzig manager Ralf Rangnick and departing RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann.

Spurs had wanted Nagelsmann to replace Mourinho, but Bayern Munich recently agreed terms for the 33-year-old to become their new coach from July

Ryan Mason is currently in caretaker charge of Spurs until the end of the season.

As well as finding Mourinho’s long-term successor, another priority for chairman Daniel Levy is addressing Harry Kane’s future at the club.

The 27-year-old striker is under contract until June 2024 and has again reiterated his desire to win trophies as opposed to individual awards.

“Individual awards are great, they are fantastic achievements,” said Kane.

“When I look back at the end of my career, these are the things I will go over and take in more, but the goal right now as a player is to win team trophies. I want to be winning the biggest prizes there is to offer and we are not quite doing that.”

BAYERN MUNICH CONFIRM APPOINTMENT OF SPURS TARGET JULIAN NAGELSMANN AS NEW MANAGER

Bayern Munich have announced the appointment of 33-year-old Julian Nagelsmann as their new head coach on a five-year contract.

RB Leipzig boss Nagelsmann had been considered as a target for Tottenham Hotspur following last week’s sacking of Jose Mourinho, but the former Hoffenheim coach has opted to stay in Germany and move to the record 30-times Bundesliga title winners.

Bayern boss Hansi Flick, who won the Champions League last season, had asked to be released from his contract, and is expected to take over from Joachim Low as the new Germany boss after this summer’s European Championships.

Bayern said in a statement: “FC Bayern have appointed Julian Nagelsmann as their new head coach.

“The Bavarian-born 33-year-old will move to Munich from RB Leipzig on 1 July 2021 ahead of the new season, signing a five-year-contract with the German record champions until 30 June 2026.

“This comes after FC Bayern agreed to current head coach Hansi Flick’s request to have his contract terminated on 30 June 2021, two years earlier than its original expiry date.”

Nagelsmann had coached Leipzig for the past two seasons, and challenged Bayern in this season’s title race before the Bavarians pulled away at the top.

Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff said “After there had been a lot of movement over the past few days regarding the coaching position at FC Bayern Munich for the new season, Julian Nagelsmann approached us and told us in open discussions that it was a lifelong dream for him, FC Bayern coach and he would like to move to Munich if the opportunity arises after the end of this season.

“Julian took a fantastic path in Leipzig and developed our club very successfully. Not only did he make our players better, but he also took the team to the next level as a collective.”

BLOW FOR SPURS AS MUNICH OPEN TALKS WITH NAGELSMANN

Tottenham have been dealt a blow in their hunt for a new manager, with the Independent reporting Bayern Munich have opened talks to hire RB Leipzig’s Julian Nagelsmann.

Spurs bosses had been said to have earmarked the 33-year-old as an ideal replacement for Jose Mourinho, but they may now need to turn their attention elsewhere.

Their solution may actually be closer to home, with Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers also being linked with the role.

The Daily Star, citing 90min, says Rodgers is high on Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy’s radar, but Leicester are believed to be willing to match or better any potential offer in order to keep the Northern Irishman at the King Power Stadium.
