US Open: Medvedev reaches third straight semi-final, to face Auger-Aliassime

Daniil Medvedev, who lost in the semi-finals a year ago to eventual winner Dominic Thiem, is one of the main candidates aiming to thwart Novak Djokovic’s bid for a calendar Grand Slam.

World number two Daniil Medvedev dropped his first set at this year’s U.S. Open but eventually overcame Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp 6-3, 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 to reach his third straight semi-final at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday.

Van de Zandschulp had enjoyed a remarkable run, taking down 11th seed Diego Schwartzman to reach his first Grand Slam quarter-final, where he fired off 20 forehand winners and was the first player here to take Medvedev past the two-hour mark.

The Dutch qualifier outlasted the Russian in a 20-shot rally and then converted on break point in the fifth game of the third set before taking it on Arthur Ashe Stadium, the first sign of weakness Medvedev had shown since arriving in New York.

But the 2019 runner-up, who fired down 13 aces in the match, came roaring back in the fourth set, winning all but two of his first-serve points and never facing a break point.

Van de Zandschulp fended off match point in the 10th game, holding his serve to wild applause from a rowdy New York crowd, but Medvedev responded with a quick hold and a break, helped by a double fault from the Dutchman.

The match was the first real challenge of the tournament for Medvedev, who looked on track to flatten yet another competitor at the start after getting up two breaks through the first five games.

The Australian Open runner-up never faced a break point in the second set, which he wrapped up in a brisk 22 minutes, but struggled in the third set, making 13 unforced errors, and van de Zandschulp pounced.

“First two sets were kind of under control. He was missing some balls, some important points,” said Medvedev. “Then third and fourth set was really tough. He played top level, served really big.

“Was breaking the rhythm a little bit, so was really tough set. I’m really happy that in the fourth I managed to, first of all, hold my serve really easily and managed to break him in the end where I had few opportunities to do before also.”

Medvedev, who lost in the semi-finals a year ago to eventual winner Dominic Thiem, is one of the main candidates aiming to thwart world number one Novak Djokovic’s bid for a calendar Grand Slam – though he is not thinking about facing the 20-times major winner just yet.

“I don’t think about him, because as we saw, anybody can beat anybody. If he’s in the final, and if I’m there, I’m happy,” said Medvedev. He’s also happy, I guess.”

Liverpool considering move for Real Madrid midfielder Marco Asensio

Real Madrid midfielder Marco Asensio has reportedly emerged as a potential transfer target for Liverpool.

Despite making a number of sales during the summer window, Jurgen Klopp opted to add just RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate to his first-team squad.

However, according to todofichajes.com, the Merseyside giants may look to take advantage of any opportunities at the midway point of the season.

The report claims that Liverpool are interested in signing Asensio, who has been restricted to appearances off the substitutes’ bench during Real’s opening three La Liga fixtures under Carlo Ancelotti.

Liverpool are allegedly prepared to test the water with a bid of €35m (£30.07m) at a time when Asensio will have just 18 months remaining on his contract.

Los Blancos officials could be tempted into accepting an offer of that size ahead of pushing forward with plans to sign Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe.

Joan Laporta confirms talks with Ronald Koeman over new Barcelona contract

President Joan Laporta has revealed that contract discussions have already been held with Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman.

The Dutchman has needed to handle a number of on and off-the-pitch issues during his time at Camp Nou, including the club’s financial crisis and the departure of Lionel Messi.

There has also been a change of leadership behind the scenes with Laporta returning to the Catalan giants to replace Josep Maria Bartomeu.

Despite calls for a fresh face in the dugout, Laporta has insisted that Koeman has his full support for the coming season.

Speaking to Onze TV, Laporta said: “Koeman has all my support, my respect and all the confidence so that he can work as comfortably as possible.

“We have already spoken a couple of times with Rob Jansen, his agent, so we are talking. I told the coach that he has to be strong, he cannot be in the weak position of ending the contract, so I raised the possibility of extending the contract.”

Barcelona have recorded two wins and a draw from their opening three La Liga fixtures of the new campaign.

Father went to hospital after Verstappen win

Max Verstappen may have been on top of the world, but his father Jos Verstappen had to be airlifted to hospital shortly after watching the Dutch GP on television.

Dutch reports say the 49-year-old former Formula 1 driver was taken to the hospital in Roermond, in the southern Netherlands, due to stomach and intestinal pain.

De Telegraaf claims he has been treated with antibiotics.

“After that, it should be fine again,” Jos Verstappen confirmed.

Before that, Verstappen snr watched his son Max race to victory from pole position at their home Dutch GP at Zandvoort by watching television at home.

“Jos had been having problems with his intestines for a few days,” Max and Jos’ manager Raymond Vermeulen told Het Laatste Nieuws.

“He watched until halfway through the race, but then couldn’t walk straight anymore.”

Vermeulen says Jos agreed to be checked out in hospital because he plans to travel again soon.

“A precaution,” the Verstappen manager said. “He was then able to go home again. Everything is going well with Jos.”

However, the Verstappen family is unlikely to be too disappointed that they couldn’t celebrate the highly popular Dutch GP dominance all together.

“There was not so much euphoria from Max, because the Verstappen family has only one goal – to become world champion,” said former F1 tyre engineer Kees van de Grint.

“If they don’t get that title by the end of the year, all of this glory and this orange party will be forgotten,” he told RTL GP.

“That’s why Max is so down-to-earth – he knows what a tough task lies ahead of him.”

Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain to battle for Theo Hernandez

Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly identified AC Milan defender Theo Hernandez as a future transfer target.

The two European giants are regarded among the favourites for this season’s Champions League after a productive summer window.

However, the left-hand side of defence has sometimes been an issue for both clubs, something which PSG have attempted to rectify with the addition of Sporting Lisbon’s Nuno Mendes.

According to Calciomercato, that signing may not stop PSG joining Man City in the race to sign Hernandez in 2022 or 2023.

The Frenchman has enjoyed a hugely impressive two years at San Siro, contributing 13 goals from 67 starts in Serie A.

Despite Hernandez possessing a contract until 2024, Milan may be tempted into a sale if they can make a significant profit on the €20m (£17.18m) which they shelled out in 2019.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s second Manchester United debut to be delayed

Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly emerged as a doubt for Manchester United‘s Premier League fixture with Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon.

Upon completing his sensational return to Old Trafford late last month, the date of September 11 was immediately pencilled in for the first outing of his second spell.

However, The Sun claims that the Portuguese superstar may have to wait until next week to represent his new club.

Ronaldo has been forced to quarantine since travelling from his homeland last week, preventing him from spending time at United’s training facilities.

The coronavirus measures will restrict Ronaldo to just one day with the rest of the squad before the visit of the Magpies.

The report suggests that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may keep the veteran on the sidelines until United’s Champions League trip to Young Boys three days later.

Jamie Carragher expecting Mohamed Salah to sign new Liverpool contract

Former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher is confident that Mohamed Salah will soon sign a new contract with Jurgen Klopp‘s side.

Salah’s existing deal at Anfield is due to expire in June 2023, and there remains speculation surrounding the Egypt international’s future, with Real Madrid and Barcelona both said to be admirers.

A recent report claimed that the attacker had informed Liverpool that he wants £500,000 a week in wages to commit his future to the Merseyside club.

Carragher is confident that his former team will soon be able to announce a new deal for Salah, who has scored 127 goals and registered 49 assists in 206 appearances for the Reds.

“I think Liverpool have some of the best players in the world, with Alisson signing a six-year deal and Virgil van Djik. I think Mohamed Salah will be the next one to sign,” Carragher told Sky Sports News.

“In years gone by, certainly when I was at the club, if we had players of that quality, they would be going to Real Madrid or Barcelona. We’ve lost so many players over the years, but the club this year hasn’t spent much in the transfer market.

“We’ve bought [Ibrahima] Konate in for £36m and we’ve certainly recouped that through the sales. I think the money and expenditure this pre-season was going to go on new contracts, so that those players can stay at Liverpool for the rest of their careers.”

Liverpool will resume their 2021-22 Premier League season away to Leeds United on September 12.

Eduardo Camavinga “very happy and proud” to join Real Madrid

French midfielder Eduardo Camavinga has said that he has realised a childhood dream by joining Real Madrid.

The 18-year-old’s future was the subject of much speculation over the summer transfer window, with a number of clubs said to be interested in signing him from Rennes.

Real Madrid completed a move for the France international just before the deadline, though, with the midfielder penning a six-year contract at the Bernabeu.

Camavinga, who made 88 appearances during his time at Rennes, has said that he is “very happy and proud” to have made the move to the Spanish capital.

“My move to Real Madrid was done very quickly. I am very happy and proud,” Camavinga told reporters. “But I don’t want this announcement to change my work with [France’s] under-21s. Whether I play at Rennes or at Real Madrid I will continue to give my best, and of course I dream of the senior team, but step by step.

“Now I’ll go to Rennes to pack my bags, I’ll move to Madrid and I’ll continue on my journey. It’s a dream I had when I was a kid. I can’t wait to discover the stadium, which is very impressive. I hope to play there as soon as the building work is finished.”

Camavinga could make his debut for Los Blancos against Celta Vigo on September 12.

Cristiano Ronaldo in line to train with Manchester United on Thursday

Cristiano Ronaldo will reportedly train with his new Manchester United teammates on Thursday ahead of making his second debut for the club against Newcastle United on September 11.

The 36-year-old became the all-time highest international men’s goalscorer on Wednesday night when he scored his 110th and 111th goals for Portugal in their 2-1 win over the Republic of Ireland, but a booking in the latter stages of the contest means that he is suspended for the clash with Azerbaijan, which saw him released from international duty early.

Ronaldo flew into Manchester Airport on Thursday evening but was immediately forced to isolate for five days in line with government regulations.

Providing that Ronaldo returns two negative coronavirus tests then he will be able to link up with his new teammates next week, and according to journalist Tom McDermott, the former Sporting Lisbon youngster will begin training at Carrington on Thursday.

McDermott has also claimed, via Twitter, that the former Juventus attacker will be in the starting XI for Man United’s clash with Newcastle on September 11.

The Portuguese, who will again wear the number seven shirt for the Red Devils, has penned a two-year deal at Old Trafford, returning to the club that he previously represented between 2003 and 2009.

Manchester City set to quadruple Phil Foden’s wages

Manchester City are reportedly prepared to offer Phil Foden a new deal which would see him almost quadruple his wages at the Etihad.

The 21-year-old burst onto the scene under Pep Guardiola and starred in the 2020-21 season, banking 16 goals and 10 assists from 50 appearances across all competitions.

Foden’s deal with the Premier League champions is not due to expire until the summer of 2024, but City supposedly want to reward the youngster’s stellar performances with a bumper new contract.

According to the Daily Star, Foden currently pockets a modest £40k per week in Manchester, but Guardiola’s side are keen to up his wages to £150k per week following his rapid rise.

The report adds that City are aiming to tie the England international down for the next six years, which would see him follow Kevin De Bruyne, Ederson, John Stones and Ruben Dias in signing new long-term deals.

Foden – who is yet to make an appearance this season due to a foot injury – already has 124 appearances for Man City under his belt, with 31 goals and 22 assists to boot.
