JOE GOMEZ UNDERGOES SURGERY ON SERIOUS KNEE INJURY.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has undergone surgery on his left knee tendon after suffering a serious injury during England training on Wednesday, report Simon Hughes and Caoimhe O’Neill.

Liverpool have said there is no timescale on the 23-year-old’s return although the nature of the injury is likely to rule Gomez out for a considerable period of the season.

Gomez injured his knee while jumping for a header as England prepared for Thursday night’s friendly against the Republic of Ireland. “What was upsetting was to see he was in a fair bit of pain,” England manager Gareth Southgate later said.

Gomez collapsed in considerable pain after his knee gave way under no challenge in England training on Wednesday morning.

He immediately went for scans to determine the severity of the damage.

Fortunately for Liverpool, the scans indicated that Gomez had suffered no ligament damage. He still underwent surgery on his knee tendon, however, with Liverpool confirming on Thursday that “the issue is likely to rule him out for a significant part of the remainder of 2020-21.”

Liverpool have provided no timescale for his return, although the club are hopeful he can still play some part in the 2020-21 campaign.

PREMIER LEAGUE TO SCRAP PAY PER VIEW PLANS.

The Premier League will scrap its controversial pay-per-view scheme imminently, chief executive Richard Masters confirmed to a government committee recently.

Fans, who are currently prevented from attending stadiums because of the COVID-19 pandemic, have been asked to pay out 14.95 pounds ($19.80) to watch games not already selected for broadcast by Premier League rights holders Sky Sports and BT Sport.

It provoked a backlash from fans who already have to pay subscriptions for sports channels, and Masters said the Premier League would be changing direction.

“We needed to come up with a different commercial solution,” Masters told MPs. “We took the decision to move to pay-per-view, now we’re reviewing that decision.

“We have listened to feedback and we will be changing direction and moving away from it and taking another step that will see us through lockdown, the Christmas period and into January, but I cannot say what it is.”

The Football Supporters’ Association had urged the Premier League to reconsider the pricing and some fans opted to donate to a charity as part of a protest against the scheme.

Masters also said he does not expect the reintroduction of five substitutes for the “foreseeable future”.

Clubs were allowed to increase the number of substitutes to five per match in the 2019-20 campaign when the league restarted in June, after a three-month hiatus due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

The teams reverted to three substitutes this season but Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp and Manchester City counterpart Pep Guardiola have both said the decision is partly responsible for a spate of muscle injuries across the top flight.

“We have had two votes on it at club level and both have been relatively supportive of three subs,” Masters said.

“That has created some frustration, alongside discussions of fixture scheduling, which is related to the pandemic.

“There is a real issue and I don’t see it changing in the foreseeable future.”

ENGLISH FA OUTSOURCE HIRE OF GREG CLARKE’S SUCCESSOR.

The English Football Association are expected to outsource their recruitment of Greg Clarke’s successor as chairperson and will finalise their hiring process in the coming days with the aim of making a relatively quick appointment, sources have confirmed

Clarke’s sudden resignation on Tuesday evening following his use of a racist term when giving evidence to a Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee earlier in the day has left the English football’s governing body without a figurehead at a key time.

The 63-year-old referred to “coloured footballers,” stereotyped south Asians and Afro-Carribean people as possessing “different career interests” and described homosexuality as a “life choice” during a hearing designed to examine why the game had collectively failed to agree a financial rescue package for the lower leagues.

A statement from FA chief-executive Mark Bullingham released on Wednesday read: “We are committed to playing a lead role in actively enhancing equality and diversity across English football, whilst steadfastly challenging and tackling all forms of discrimination.”

Although Peter McCormick has been named as interim chairperson, the Harrogate lawyer is not considered a candidate for the role on a permanent basis and the FA are keen to make an appointment that will be able to robustly represent the organisation in key discussions around the restructuring of English football in the short and long term.

According to reports, the FA are in the midst of finalising the best process to identify the best candidates while following their own code of conduct recommendations. There is a sense of urgency around making an appointment, according to sources, but also a recognition the process must not be rushed.

The FA also outsourced the recruitment process for Martin Glenn’s replacement as chief executive, firstly using head-hunter agency Odgers before engaging Spencer Stuart — only to later decide to promote internal candidate Bullingham at the end of the 2018-19 season.

Bullingham was expected to make a statement on Clarke’s departure later on Wednesday afternoon and the FA are set to clarify their hiring procedures in another public statement once finalised.

No shortlist has yet been drawn up but several high-profile figures are believed to be interested in the position including Baroness Sue Campbell, the director of women’s football at the FA, and the organisation’s Inclusion Advisory Board chairman Paul Elliott.

Elliott is also thought to be a leading contender to replace Clarke as England’s vice-president representative at FIFA.

CHRISTIAN PULISIC DEPARTS USMNT CAMP TO COMPLETE HIS INJURY REHAB AT CHELSEA.

United States Men’s National Team Gregg Berhalter announced today that Christian Pulisic will depart their training camp in Wales to return to Chelsea to continue his injury rehab. The 22-year-old winger injured his hamstring during warmups before Chelsea’s match against Burnley on October 31st.

He has not featured for Chelsea since, and he was a long shot to appear for the USMNT in friendlies against Wales tomorrow and Panama on Monday. Still, Pulisic wanted to show up at camp to work with the rest of his American teammates and get to know some of the new faces that are in this camp.

“Christian is a big part of our group. He has been working through an injury, but it really says a lot that he wanted to come into camp, be around the guys and continue to be a leader with this team,” Berhalter said in a statement released by U.S. Soccer.

U.S. Soccer did not indicate that Pulisic will be replaced on the USMNT roster, so the current roster stands at 23 players:

GOALKEEPERS (3): Ethan Horvath (Club Brugge), Chituru Odunze (Leicester City), Zack Steffen (Manchester City)

DEFENDERS (7): John Brooks (Wolfsburg), Reggie Cannon (Boavista FC), Sergiño Dest (Barcelona), Matt Miazga (Anderlecht), Tim Ream (Fulham), Chris Richards (Bayern Munich), Antonee Robinson (Fulham)

MIDFIELDERS (7): Tyler Adams (RB Leipzig), Johnny Cardoso (Internacional), Richard Ledezma (PSV Eindhoven), Sebastian Lletget (LA Galaxy), Weston McKennie (Juventus), Yunus Musah (Valencia), Owen Otasowie (Wolverhampton)

FORWARDS (7): Konrad de la Fuente (Barcelona), Nicholas Gioacchini (Caen), Uly Llanez (Heerenveen), Gio Reyna (Borussia Dortmund), Sebastian Soto (Telstar), Tim Weah (Lille)

We hope Christian recovers well and we see him back on the field for Chelsea very soon.

ENGLAND CONFIRM JOE GOMEZ INJURY AS DEFENDER ADDS TO LIVERPOOL INJURY LIST.

England have announced Joe Gomez has withdrawn from the squad for their forthcoming internationals after sustaining a knee injury in training.

The defender will undergo further diagnosis on the issue with Liverpool’s medical team.

Gomez will therefore miss the Three Lions’ fixtures with Republic of Ireland, Belgium and Iceland during the current international break.

Joe Gomez adds to the list of players who have been out injured for Liverpool this season.

The reds have had more than four different pairings in a season that is yet to enter Week 10. Since the injury of Virgil Van Dijk at the Merseyside derby, the likes of Fabinho Tavares, Rhys Williams, Nathan Philips have paired with Joe Gomez at the Centre Back before the arrival of Joel Matip who also just returned from injury.

Sad to note that Alexander Arnold picked up an injury in the same game that ushered in Joel Matip to the game back from Injury.

Jurgen Klopp faces a very frustrating situation as the German is being monitored on his quest to attack the title again and not defend it.

CALLUM ROBINSON PULLS OUT OF IRELAND SQUAD AFTER TESTING POSITIVE FOR CORONA VIRUS.

Republic of Ireland boss Stephen Kenny has insisted he does not feel cursed after losing striker Callum Robinson to a positive coronavirus test on the eve of the friendly clash with England.

The West Brom striker is self-isolating a month after a series of positive Covid-19 results wrecked Kenny’s plans for the Euro 2020 play-off semi-final clash with Slovakia and the Nations League fixtures against Wales and Finland.

Aaron Connolly and Adam Idah were forced to miss Ireland’s defeat in Slovakia after sitting too close on the team’s aeroplane to a member of staff who later tested positive for coronavirus.

Asked if he felt cursed, the Ireland manager said: ‘No, absolutely not. This is the way of the world at the moment. People are talking about a vaccine being imminent and 90 per cent proof, all that sort of headlines there have been recent days, so hopefully this situation is temporary throughout the world.

‘In Callum’s case, he came in and on the first test he’s tested positive. He wasn’t feeling unwell, so it’s just unfortunate for him, really.’

The players, it was later revealed, were sat in the wrong seats on the plane.

Connolly will again be missing after picking up a hamstring injury and Kenny admitted his absence, along with Robinson’s was a blow ahead of Thursday’s game and the Nations League double-header against Wales and Bulgaria.

He said: ‘It is the case that we’re disappointed, but you’ve got to deal with whatever comes your way.

‘We’re thrilled at a great three games for us, playing England at Wembley, playing Wales in Cardiff and playing back in the Aviva Stadium against Bulgaria.

Three games in six days is terrific and terrific games to play in for the players, so we’re looking forward to the games.’

UNITED STALLING ON ROMERO DECISION AS HENDERSON RUMOURED TO LEAVE OLD TRAFFORD ON LOAN.

Manchester United are delaying a decision on Sergio Romero’s future until a plan for Dean Henderson’s development is finalised, reports say.

Romero is keen to leave Old Trafford after being omitted from the Premier League and Champions League squads by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

There is interest in the Argentina international at home and abroad ahead of a possible move in January but United are unlikely to make a decision until Henderson’s immediate future is resolved.

After returning from a successful loan spell at Sheffield United in the summer, Henderson is content with his role at the club for now but has been told by England manager Gareth Southgate he will need to play more regularly if he hopes to challenge Everton’s Jordan Pickford for the No.1 spot at the European Championships.

It opens up the possibility that Henderson, who has started three games this season, could be allowed to secure a loan move in January to boost his chances of ousting Pickford, who has come under fire for his performances at Goodison Park, before the tournament.

Henderson’s temporary departure would increase Romero’s chances of having to stay put until at least the summer when he could be a free agent.

The 33-year-old, valued at between £8 million and £10m by United, is under contract until the end of the season while the club also hold an option to extend his deal for another 12 months.

Solskjaer is keen to keep hold of an established No. 2 goalkeeper to provide cover for David De Gea during a season which could see his team play more than 60 games. His third choice is 37-year-old Lee Grant, who has made just two first team appearances in two-and-a-half years.

Meanwhile, United will not be releasing defender Victor Lindelof to play for Sweden against Denmark because of UK quarantine rules imposed on travel to and from Denmark.

Lindelof will instead go straight to Stockholm and could play against Croatia and France in the Nations League if he is passed fit.

The 26-year-old has been struggling with a back injury which meant he was an unused substitute for the 2-1 Champions League defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir although he was able to return for the 3-1 win over Everton on Saturday.

ENGLISH FA BOSS APOLOGISES FOR RACIST REMARK.

Football Association chairman Greg Clarke apologised on Tuesday for using a racist phrase at a parliamentary committee hearing about the future of English football.

Asked why there isn’t an openly gay men’s footballer at the elite level in England, Clarke said, “The answer is I don’t know, right, because I’ve spent a lot of time talking to people from the LGBT community. I’ve talked to LGBT athletes from other sports who have come out.

“The views I’ve heard is if I look at what happens to high-profile female footballers, high-profile coloured footballers and the abuse they take on social media.”

Clarke was appearing at a Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee gathering to discuss the lack of progress in conversations between the Premier League, English Football League and the FA aimed at agreeing on a financial package to help all 92 clubs survive the ongoing revenue drop caused by COVID-19.

Members of Parliament also used the opportunity to tackle a series of wider issues including the lack of minority ethnic representation in boardrooms and insufficient funding for women’s and grassroots football.

Members of Parliament also used the opportunity to tackle a series of wider issues including the lack of minority ethnic representation in boardrooms and insufficient funding for women’s and grassroots football.

Clarke apologised and said that he sometimes trips over his words because he worked in the U.S. for many years, where he used the term “people of colour.”

Clarke had outlined at length how the FA were tackling issues of diversity and inclusion in English football and recognised the importance of the problems in lengthy, detailed answers.

But his evidence was littered with further clumsy language, stereotyping Asian people while also claiming a coach told him that young girls do not like the ball being kicked at them.

“If you go to the IT department at the FA, there’s a lot more South Asians than there are Afro Caribbeans,” he said during one answer. “They have different career interests.”

The FA released a statement shortly after the hearing concluded. “Greg Clarke is deeply apologetic for the language he used to reference members of the ethnic minority community during the select committee hearing today,” the statement read. “He acknowledged that using the term ‘coloured’ is not appropriate and wholeheartedly apologised during the hearing.”

LINGARD PATH WAYS WITH AGENT RAIOLA.

Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard has parted company with agent Mino Raiola, sources have revealed.

Lingard has been working with Raiola, who also represents United teammate Paul Pogba, since the start of the year but will now be managed entirely by family members and other close associates.

The decision was mutual and Raiola remains on good terms with Lingard and his team.

Lingard hasn’t featured for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team since the 3-0 win over Brighton in the Carabao Cup in September

He has missed the last seven games because of a hip injury but there is hope he could return to full fitness soon.

The 27-year-old, who was the subject of interest from both Tottenham and Porto during the summer transfer window, has entered the final year of the four-year contract he signed in April 2017.

United hold an option to extend the deal by an additional 12 months until the summer of 2022 which is yet to be triggered according to sources.

The club are keen to keep hold of Lingard, who has made more than 200 senior appearances after coming through the academy, and do not want to lose the England international for free.

Lingard is open to staying at Old Trafford but is also eager to play more regular football after falling down the pecking order under Solskjaer.

Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford will delay joining up with the England squad to give United’s medical staff more time to assess the shoulder injury he picked up during the 3-1 win over Everton on Saturday.

England will play three games during the international break against Republic of Ireland, Belgium and Iceland.

United are back in action against West Brom at Old Trafford on Nov. 21.

ARSENAL 0-3 ASTONVILLA: WATKINS BRACE SINKS GUNNERS AT THE EMIRATES AS VILLA MOVE UP TO SIXTH.

Ollie Watkins scored two goals as Aston Villa maintained their 100 per cent away record with a 3-0 success at Arsenal.

The visitors started brightly and John McGinn had a first-minute strike ruled out by referee Martin Atkinson following a review.

But Villa went ahead on 25 minutes. Bukayo Saka tried to clear Matt Targett’s cross and, under pressure from Trezeguet, steered the ball into his own net at the back post.

And they got a deserved second on 72 minutes with a close-range header by Watkins from Ross Barkley’s superb delivery.

Watkins made the points safe only three minutes later, this time providing a crisp first-time finish following a driving run by Jack Grealish.

Villa’s win, their third on the road this campaign without conceding a goal, moves them up to sixth spot on 15 points, three clear of Arsenal in 11th.
